I didn’t mean to waste the day, I just live my life that way. Writing these words in the sand, feeling the blood drip from my hand and my heart. I’m falling apart from this thing you call love. Any port for a sinking ship. Watch the band abandon it. Let the room spin out of control. A rule from a queen with no throne in her court. It’s of no great important, this thing you call love. What is the line that they sing in the song? Is it still true without melody? What are the words tattooed on your arm? Beneath the pavement remains the beach. Bring your kiss to the head that’s split. A farewell said through bloody lips. I felt myself become two inside. Laid down with her side by side in the dark, I was smudged by the mark of the thing you call love. The gripping hands and the bended legs. The one who gives and the one who begs. The embarrassment of telling the truth. A lie with the intention to soothe the soul. I am so well controlled by that thing you call love. What is the line that they sing in the song? Is it still true without melody? What were the words tattooed on your arm? Beneath the pavement remains the beach.

Your dreams are coming truer. In fact they’re made on demand. Man’s work is spread like manure, sweating like a holy man. The whole world’s turning into fire, nowhere to look but at flame. How could you satisfy my least desire when you don’t know my name? You want it? You got it? And on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on. Maybe I need to pay my dues though. At least I could pay my bills. More like a fly on the window than a cactus on the window sill. Sometimes I feel so emotional but listen to me talk talk talk talk. How are you doing? I’m just feeling this fluid dripping down the back of my tongue. You want it? You got it? And on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on. Maybe we should turn on the radio, something from the American canon. Pop makes me act so crazy though. I love L.A. and I’m an alien. I feel like I could buy anything, running around like dollar signs for eyes. Pay top dollar for every fantasy, ending up infantilized. You want it? You got it? And on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on.

Little Bugs 02:46
I don’t know why, she’s walking away so far from me and seeming to fade and I don’t know why I’m calling her name, I should let her go but I want her to stay. I don’t know why, she’s working her hands, sending me signals I don’t understand and I don’t know why I’m counting to ten, sulking alone and losing the thread. I don’t know why our cruelty spun was just our own way of showing our love and I don’t know why we can’t change when we’re just little bugs making our way home.

Love is Gone 04:12
First my mind was dark, we split apart and it burst into light again. Then the feelings I knew they were so true like the way before love began. Love is gone but life goes on. Sure I’m still feeling lost, I might as well toss and turn the day away, but it doesn’t change as the sun fades the moon casts golden rays. Love is gone but life goes on. Lay down in the grass, the feelings will pass if you let them go on their way. It all seems so strange, if I was unchanged would you even want to talk to me. Love is gone but life goes on.

Peace Sign 04:16
There’s a peace sign formed by your hand but I don’t think you understand what it means in the abstract. There’s a peace sign on my bedroom wall, Michael Jordan with a ball, an inspiration to us all. There’s a peace sign on the bumper sticker of the car that crashed into the bar that had the good jukebox. There’s a peace sign floating in my mind, a tattoo design on a girl that I knew in Vermont. I don’t get hung up on all these variations, it’s noise babe, it’s nothing. It’s true, it’s true meaning is dissolving. I mean I just need something that I can get off to and I don’t mean intellectually. It’s true it’s true, I’m over thinking the thing. But there’s a peace sign carved into this bench. I wonder if they regret writing E + E forever. There’s a peace sign glowing on my TV, selling soda to me, and I think it’s starting to work. There’s a peace sign in the margins of your paper that your teacher gave you an A for, effort at the very least. There’s a peace sign cryptically endorsed, it all seems so very forced, who even knows what it means. I don’t get hung up on all these variations, it’s noise babe, it’s nothing. It’s true, it’s true, meaning is dissolving. I mean I just need something that I can get off to and I don’t mean intellectually. It’s true it’s true, I’m over thinking the thing.

Easy Way Out 03:59
If you got a twenty maybe you could spot me five, I just need something to make the night come alive. I just wanna be there and know that we could be there again. The delineation between being cruel and funny is too much for my stoned mind but I don’t mind nothing. I just wanna be there you know that we could be there again. And in time you’ll see all your lines were wasted on me. There’s a light that shines in my eyes as I lie to you about all I’ll do for you. Oh, I need an easy way out. I’m dreaming of an easy way out. I’m trying for an easy way out. I’d buy myself an easy way out. I’d love an easy way out. Oh but love wasn’t an easy way out. I mistook you for an easy way out. So I’m still looking for an easy way out of telling you these lies as I look into your eyes. Think I got a line now, call it intuition. Bartender write the number down. Stop acting so suspicious. I just wanna be there. I know that we could be there again. And I’m sorry to wander aimlessly but I can hear the siren song play and if you don’t wanna live, then head on home without me. I just wanna be there, I know that we could be there again. And in time you’ll see all your lines were wasted on me. There’s a light that shines in my eyes as I lie to you about all I’ll do for you. Oh I need an easy way out. I’m pleading for an easy way out. I’m trying for an easy way out. I’d die for an easy way out. Thank god for the easy ways out. Oh but God wasn’t an easy way out. I mistook you for an easy way out. So I’m still looking for an easy way out of telling you these lies as I look into your eyes. I’m laying on your couch and I’m looking like a vampire, giving you a thumbs up while setting off a landline, but I just wanted to see you, I just wanted to see you again.

Summer’s gone on too long. Grass turns into sand. There’s a saint in the car, seeing the trick in the slight of your hand. Lover will be along but the laughter is canned. Doesn’t matter who you are, no matter you hurt it doesn’t make you a man. Every star in the sky, is a chance that’s been missed. As the sun starts to rise remember the times that you haven’t been kissed. This song’s on the phone, the silence a shroud. You’re walking alone, feeling the words that you left in your mouth.
8.
Too young to know this will get old. Watching, waiting, the feelings gone. What once was love is violence done. If you want it I’ll let you go, protected by snowstorms and grey smoke that drifts along the northern shore. R U trying 2 break my heart while the world is falling apart? I guess I’m ready for this to begin. Breathing out while the fire comes in.

------

Peace Sign aesthetically pulls from the complete canon of rock & roll: from classic to indie to the obscure including bands like The Tall Dwarfs, Television, The Kinks, Karen Dalton, Wilco, The Baptist Generals, vashti bunyan, Arthur Russell, Gram Parsons etc. etc. The album avoids stylized production in favor of clearly transmitting the folks in the room knocking about on their instruments.

The generally positive energy of the music doesn't exactly always betray the darkness of the lyrical content. The album ruminates upon failure and mistrust - the overwhelming kinetic energy produced by things gone wrong. The play between positivity and negativity may be a reflection of the view that one should be honest about failures and shortcomings - that this doesn't have to lead to sadness or self pity, but instead can steer one towards catharsis, clarity and possibly positive action.
